WHAT IS A PERSON WITH LOW VISION?
It’s a person who has visual difficulty to perform a specific activity, despite having the best optical correction through glasses or contact lenses and who have had ophthalmological surgical or pharmacological treatments but persists with low vision.
Low vision is not defined as a disease, since it is a consequence of a limited condition of vision, vision is so limited that the person has difficulty performing some activities of daily life, such as: reading, writing, seeing the watch, the coins, the signs of the buses, the traffic signals, watching television and cinema, recognizing faces, until stumbling upon objects when walking, among others.
Patients with low vision can receive visual rehabilitation that allows them to perform tasks with optical and non-optical aids designed to facilitate some activities. In the Barraquer clinic, the process begins with a comprehensive, low vision care where the patient and his family are investigated to detect the limitations and generate a rehabilitation plan that includes:
ADAPTATION OF OPTICAL AND NON-OPTICAL AID
can be adapted in glasses or used manually in a usual way in order to enlarge the image that forms on the retina.
The most common devices are:
Simple, very popular and easy to use system. They are lenses that increase the size of objects and that allow to perform specific tasks of near vision that require little visual field, such as reading, check prices, check receipts, etc … They can be manual, with support, fixed focus, focusable, with light, pocket, among others.
Lenses that allow viewing objects at short distances. Unlike magnifying glasses, they allow both hands free and the visual field is wider, so they are more comfortable during long readings, writing, sewing and others. They can be monofocal, bifocal, trifocal or multifocal to alternate the look from near and far, according to the needs.
Devices that enlarge and zoom the image of distant objects. They can be attached to glasses permanently and in a central or upper position.
Recommended to control glare, perform contrast and light adaptation, as well as to improve the patient’s visual acuity. They can be organic or mineral, polarized and photochromic.
A video magnifier is an electronic device that consists of a camera, a screen, lenses and / or digital magnification. They are designed to be used, mainly, by people with low vision who are not enough with a conventional magnifying glass.
A large percentage of the patients who consult do not achieve an optimal visual level, and the closed-circuit television provides a clear image and with different contrasts that help many to finish their academic studies among other things.
